The Dark Roads
A myth, or legend to some, the Dark roads are supposedly the realm from which all nightmares are spawned, bogeymen and abominations, anything that goes bump in the night is said to have escaped the dark roads and come to the surface, these stories are told to scare children into being good. But The Dark Roads are feared all too much by adults as well. However, The Roads are considered by many to be a myth, as there is no rock solid evidence that they do exist. The Roads are not to be confused with the Shadow fell which does exist and can be proven to exist. Most Arcanists and Historians believe the old accounts of the roads are just people who happened to stumble into rather twisted parts of the shadow fell. The legends told of the Roads are very different form the shadow fell however, the roads do not appear to be a plane so much as another world suspended below our in caves and tunnels, with large sections of total nothingness spanning below them. The denizens of the fabled Roads are also very different from those of the Shadow Fell, abominations and undead wander the Roads according to legend but it seems it is home to mind flayers, litchs, Darkmantles, troglodytes, and much more. It is also the supposed home to many followers of Demogorgon and Dagon. The stories also tell of cities suspended by magic and chains over the eternal nothingness. According to the legends there are many ways to enter The Dark Roads. The most common way is by entering hidden caves in dark forests and gorges, these caves are often described as being full of spiders and terrible monsters. Another common way described s by hidden portals and dark magical pacts with extra planar creatures, and the most uncommon way, only recorded on one or two accounts is falling into a bottomless pit. Many books have been written on the subject of The Dark Roads by Arcanists and crackpots alike the most notable of which is: History of The Dark Roads by Levorian Starknus.
